This is an outstanding site. I have been researching and recreating portions of the 2d Engineer Battalion history and your site is a treasure trove. Numerous items in our history were lost when the Battalion was inactivated in Korea, and it has been quite the chore to gather data your site has helped immesely in our Battalions early history. I really appreciate your efforts.

A good evening to you, Ed. I love your site-the layout, photos, etc...
I have been studying the 3rd Army Carnival at Coblenz & found your site during some research on the subject. Boy, am I ever glad I did! You have posted a photo of the carnival that puts much in perspective for me. I can now say with certainty I have documented the location. Thank you very much.

In Aug., 1917, they would have been in El Paso, Texas getting ready to leave for duty in France. Care to share a digital picture of it?

My father-in-law, Herbert Charles Grant, was with the 316th Engineers, WW I. I am trying to make a history for my grandsons. Can you direct me to information? I have a copy of his discharge, but I don't know how to get his full record. Thank you,
Rosemarie Grant

The roster for Company "A" in the regimental history lists:

GRANT, Herbert C., Pvt. 1st Cl., 330 Los Angeles St., Inglewood, Calif.

I see no indication that he was ever a casualty.

The 316th Engineers did see combat in France. They worked at the front for 66 days in Sep., Oct. and Nov., 1918. They served in the 91st Division and had 59 casualties - 28 KIA, 13 died of wounds, 18 MIA.

The National Archives had a fire in the 1970s in which most WW1 records were destroyed. I suggest that you try to get a copy of the book via inter-library loan, if you are near a county library. It should be available to you unless it is very rare. There are more details in the book, including pictures, one of which is Company "A.".

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the history of my grandfather's experience in the Great War. I didn't know he fought at Belleau Wood until I found this web site!
